Tree planting exercise in nyeri
Principal Secretary in the newly created State Department for implementation of curriculum reforms in the Ministry of education, Prof. Fatuma Chege, urged learners in Primary and Secondary schools to engage in environment conservation by planting and maintaining trees in their respective institutions and environs. The PS said this during the roll out of the National tree planting exercise at Kamwenja Teachers College in Nyeri County.

She hailed teachers for being in the forefront in teaching the young about the importance of environmental conservation at an early age, noting that the new curriculum (CBC) emphasizes on the conservation of environment therefore enabling young learners to work with the community at an early age.
She further noted that Nyeri County has surpassed the Government’s target of achieving ten (10) percent forest cover and hailed Nyeri residents for taking the tree planting exercise seriously as a way of combating deforestation and soil erosion. The PS at the same time commended the locals for their efforts in assisting to repair damaged ecosystem and mitigate climate change.

The Nyeri Central Ecosystem conservator Mr Moses Wahome noterd that Nyeri County stands at 38% forest cover, way above the national target of 10% by 2030. He noted that the county aims to increase the forest cover to 42% by 2030.
The National tree planting program spearheaded by the ministry of environment and forestry and Kenya forest service targets to plant approximately 12000 tree seedlings in various parts the county. Learners from Nyeri high school, St Teresa’s Primary school and youth from Kazi mtaani were among those invited to participate in the exercise.
The exercise began in May 2020 with the aim of utilizing the rainy season to increase the country’s forest cover in all Counties. Also in attendance was the Deputy County Commissioner Nyeri central Joseph Mwangi Wamuti, The Director Quality assurance and standards in the Ministry of education Dr. Mary Gaturu, The Principal Kamwenja teacher’s college Wycliffe Wafula, the sub county director of education Paul Mungai among other invited Government officials.
